Back-lit letter signs are systems where LEDs are installed behind the letters, shining light onto the back wall. The light reflected around the edges of the letters is called the Halo Effect. When viewed from the front, the letters appear to float on a soft glow, providing an elegant and dimensional feel that front-lit signs cannot achieve. However, whether a halo is beautiful or unattractive depends on many variables that need precise control, it's not simply a plug-and-play result.
Back-lit Signs Work Differently Day and Night
A common misconception is that back-lit signs work the same all the time. In reality, the behavior of the sign in these two lighting conditions is completely different and must be designed to accommodate both situations.
Viewers see the color of the metal or acrylic on the front of the letters directly. Sunlight is much brighter than LEDs, making the halo almost invisible. The sign must look good based on the color and finish of the front material in natural light first.
As ambient light darkens, the LED light shining from the back reflects off the wall and spreads out as a soft halo around the edges of the letters. The beauty of the halo depends on the gap, the wall, and the chosen Kelvin temperature.

What are Standoffs fastened with, and why do they need to be extra secure?
ConstructionFor outdoor installations or extra-large letters, back-lit letters must be secured with Threaded Standoff Rods or Spacer Screws, calculated to achieve the desired gap distance. The inner end is fastened to the wall, and the outer end is fastened to the back of the letter. A caution is to use standoffs that are strong enough and secured to the actual wall structure, not just plaster, because letters protruding from the wall have a moment force that can cause them to wobble if not securely fastened. The Octopus team uses Chemical Anchors or Toggle Bolts depending on the type of wall for each job.
